The words you hear first
Wiesn is the place, and Maß is the measure
“Wiesn” is the Bavarian name for the meadow at Theresienwiese and, by extension, the festival itself. “Maß” refers to the standard one-litre beer mug, not to a small glass. You may also see “Brezn” for a pretzel, “Hendl” for roast chicken and “Haxn” for a roasted pork knuckle.
The spelling and pronunciation can look unfamiliar, but you do not need fluent Bavarian to order. Pointing, saying the tent or dish name, and asking the server is perfectly normal—especially when a menu uses local shorthand.
The famous opening phrase
O’zapft is means “It’s tapped”
The phrase is a Bavarian dialect form of “angezapft ist es”: the first keg has been tapped. Munich’s mayor says it in the Schottenhamel at noon on the first Saturday, and the words mark the official opening of beer service across the tents after the signal shots.
You will also hear “Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit”. It is a toast to conviviality and a cue to raise your glass, not an instruction to drink faster. Pace yourself, eat something and switch to water when you want to.
Useful at the table
A few words are enough to join in
“Prost!” is the everyday toast. “Zum Wohl!” is another common way to say cheers. “Guten Appetit” works before food, and “Danke” is always useful when a server brings your order through a crowded table.
Do not treat local words as a test. The Wiesn is international, and a friendly “hello”, a clear order and patience with the service flow will take you further than a forced accent.
