Oktoberfest photo etiquette: people are not part of the attraction
The crowd is photogenic. That does not make every person in it available for your camera, especially when they are vulnerable.

The easy rule
A public place is not blanket permission
Wide shots of the grounds, a ride or a public performance are different from making one stranger the subject of a close portrait. If a person is recognisable and central to the image, ask before taking or posting it when you can.
Respect a no immediately. Do not follow someone for a better angle, block a service path or pressure a worker into a photo while they are serving a table.
The Kotzhügel test
Never turn someone’s worst moment into content
The local nickname Kotzhügel refers to the slope near the Bavaria. People may sit there, but someone passed out, injured, harassed or unable to stand safely needs help and privacy. A video can outlive the festival and expose a person who cannot meaningfully agree to it.
If someone needs assistance, put the phone away and tell security, staff or first aid. The useful story is that someone helped—not the person’s face, name or humiliation.
Make the memory better
Give the camera a job that does not need a stranger
Photograph the Bavaria, tent details, a Maß and Brezn on your own table, the rides from a distance, the parade atmosphere and your group’s planned pose. Ask a server or a nearby guest only when the situation is unhurried and a clear yes is possible.
Before posting, check the background for children, people sleeping or anyone in distress. Cropping, waiting or not posting is often the more respectful edit—and usually the better story.
