Use the closest sensible stop, not only the closest stop
Theresienwiese on the U4/U5 is directly by the grounds and is a natural choice from the main station. It is also the busiest station during the festival. Schwanthalerhöhe (U4/U5), Goetheplatz and Poccistraße (U3/U6) are official alternatives; each is roughly a 10-minute walk. Follow signs and steward instructions if access is managed.
If you arrive by S-Bahn, Hackerbrücke is about a 10-minute walk. From München Hauptbahnhof, the walk to the main entrance takes roughly 15 minutes and can be simpler than transferring to the underground when platforms are crowded.
Opening weekend is different

For Oktoberfest 2026, Munich’s current visitor guidance says U3 and U6 are expected to run through Goetheplatz and Poccistraße again from 19 September after construction restrictions. The opening-weekend parades on 19 and 20 September can bring road closures and bus or tram changes. This is time-sensitive: check MVGO or the MVG/MVV journey planner on the day before choosing a route.
Hackerbrücke can be temporarily closed to manage heavy pedestrian flows, particularly on busy evenings and weekends. If that happens, use the route and entrance directions given by staff rather than trying to force the shortest path.

S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram and bus all use the MVV network. Check the current fare for your journey and whether a day ticket suits your group; do not rely on an old price copied into a travel post. MVG offers online ticket purchase options as well as its journey-planning tools.
Weekend night service differs from weekdays and can change. Before you head into a tent, confirm the last useful connection back to your accommodation. Avoid driving to the grounds: official guidance says there are no designated parking spaces in the immediate Oktoberfest area; use a Park + Ride if arriving by car.
